Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) Process

The APR is a structured, step-by-step process designed to validate your expertise, strengthen your strategic thinking and advance your career in public relations.

How It Works In FOUR STeps

1. Apply for Candidacy

Submit your application to officially begin the APR process. Once your application is approved, you’ll have one year to complete the remaining steps.

2. Panel Presentation & start studying

Prepare a presentation of your work (following the RPIE framework) to a panel of accredited professionals. This step evaluates your ability to apply public relations principles, think strategically and communicate effectively.

While you’re preparing for your panel presentation, it’s important that you begin studying for the exam. PRSA provides recommended texts for study including the APR Study Guide, as well as an online study course for an additional cost.

3. Computer-Based Examination

After successfully completing the panel presentation, you’ll want to continue studying and set up a time to take the comprehensive exam. The exam covers public relations knowledge, ethics and best practices. It can be completed in-person or online through a proctored exam provider.

4. Maintain Your Accreditation

APR is renewed every three years through continuing education and ongoing professional development, ensuring your skills stay current.
